If you just recently had dentures made for your mouth, here are three tips that will help your new dentures last a long time.

#1 Take Your Dentures Off

Dentures are not designed to be worn twenty-four hours a day. They are designed to be taken out of your mouth for at least a portion of each day. Generally, the best time to take your dentures out is when you go to sleep, as you don't need your dentures in to sleep well. However, you do need your dentures in throughout the day to eat, drink and speech clearly.

When you take your dentures out, you want to soak them the entire time they are out of your mouth. This will help keep your dentures soft and prevent them from drying out. Any dentures that have metal parts should be soaked in warm water overnight. If your dentures do not have any metal parts, you can soak them in denture cleaner solution or in a mix of equal parts water and vinegar.

Allowing your dentures to soak overnight is a great way to remove bacteria and tartar from your dentures and to fight back against plaque and stains.

#2 Clean Your Dentures

Before you soak your dentures, you need to clean them. Just like real teeth, bacteria and tartar can build up on your dentures. They can become degraded if you don't clean them. Additionally, if you don't clean your dentures, it can irritate your gums and even cause them to become infected.

You should brush your dentures at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush; this should be a different brush than the one that you use for your mouth and regular teeth. For your regular teeth, you want to use a harder bristled brush. You can clean your dentures with mild toothpaste, hand soap, or even mild dishwasher detergent.

#3 Take Care Of Your Mouth

Having dentures does not mean that you no longer have to pay attention to the health of rest of your mouth. You should still brush any permanent teeth you have in the morning and evening, and floss twice a day as well. You should wipe off your gums where you no longer have teeth with either a washcloth or a soft tooth when you clean your permanent teeth. This will help prevent your gums from getting infected. Be sure to also brush your tongue to avoid bad breath.

Taking good care of your mouth will make it easier for you to comfortable wear your dentures. If you have poor dental health habits and have to have additional teeth removed, this will change how your dentures fit. Poor dental health habits can also lead to gum infection or disease, which will make it extremely uncomfortable to wear your dentures. The best way you can take care of your dentures is by taking care of your entire mouth.
